Today we hear from Charlotte Ryder, a PR manager learning to dive in London ahead of a trip to Cayman. “I’ve been learning to dive with Oyster Diving for around three weeks now and it’s been an amazing all round experience. The fact that I can do all of my theory from the comfort of my own home and then complete my closed water dive training in a convenient Soho pool means that no time will be wasted when I reach Cayman. Rather than hitting the class room, I’ll be heading straight for the ocean! Learning to dive itself has been a challenging but fun experience. It is quite an odd sensation and it takes a little while to get your head round the fact that you are breathing underwater. My instructors have been fantastic, but I can’t wait to swap the swimming pool for the teaming reefs of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.” If you are interested in learning to dive in the UK before a trip then take advantage of our exclusive £25 off Oyster Diving’s Open Water Referral Course

DID YOU KNOW?: Have you heard of Bioluninescence Bay (or Bio Bay) up by Cayman Kai? Have you heard stories of the water lighting up at night? Well, these stories are all true! Bioluminescence is the light created by some plants, animals and fungi. Here in Bioluminescence Bay, we have a concentration, an ecosystem, of dinoflagellates which are tiny marine plants known as marine plankton. When these dynoflagellates are stimulated - by boats, swimmers, or waves for example - they emit a blue-green wavelength, a blue sparkling light that can be seen from the surface of the water. These dinoflagellates can use their bioluminescence as a defense mechanism. They can startle their predators by their flashing light or they can ward off potential predators by an indirect effect such as the "burglar alarm". The dinoflagellate can use its bioluminescence to attract attention to itself, thereby bringing attention to the predator and making the predator more vulnerable to predators from higher troph
